BOM Assembly

Bill-of-materials (BOM) assembly is the work of organizing all the parts, materials, and quantities needed to make a finished product. Its main functions include:

  • Listing components: Identify every raw material, purchased part, and subassembly the product requires.
  • Setting quantities: Specify how much of each item is needed to make one finished unit.
  • Showing the product structure: Organize components by assembly level so teams know what goes into each subassembly.
  • Adding specifications: Record part numbers, descriptions, units of measure, and approved alternatives.
  • Supporting purchasing: Give buyers the information needed to order the right materials.
  • Supporting production: Help workers gather parts, build the product, and follow the correct version of the design.
  • Estimating costs: Provide material quantities for product costing and pricing.
  • Managing changes: Update the BOM when a design, supplier, or component changes.

In short, a BOM serves as the product’s parts list and assembly structure, helping purchasing, inventory, and production work from the same information.
